About Uku Designs - Vessels of Distinction
UKU – CLAY
UKU designs is situated on the fringe of Palmerston North, New Zealand in the foothills of the Tararua ranges. We have a clear view of the North Island mountains and the gigantic wind turbines that generate the power to fire our kilns.
The Design Studio is run by Paul and Jenny Pepworth assisted by skilled artisans, Kiwa Bentson and Michael Freeman. Paul is the founder and principal designer.
Our Work
At UKU we synthesise modern production processes with time-honoured craft values and techniques.
We blend and process our own clays from superior materials to ensure fired works that are both beautiful and durable.
All original designs are hand crafted and some are adapted for mechanised production. Every piece is hand finished and individually glazed. We strive to maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship whilst exploring the boundaries of technical innovation and design.
The studio produces a wide variety of work including:
Elegant vessel-style hand-basins, finished with highly individualised glaze effects. Each vessel is a unique artwork and destined for a special bathroom.
Embossed tableware glazed in cool understated colours
Décor accessories, platters and vases with stunning iridescent glazes.
